iPod nano updated, elongated, and nano-chromatic

iPod nano chromatic

The worst-kept secret of today’s iPod event was the newly updated . Apple officially let the cat out of the bag today, sharing all the details. The new iPod nano is taller, and also turns out to be the thinnest iPod ever made. It’s available in a record nine colors, and you get two models to choose from - an 8GB version for $149, and a 16GB version for $199. The battery will hook you up with 24 hours of music or 4 hours of video. The nano now has an included accelerometer, which allows it to sense if you are holding it in portrait or landscape mode, so it can then change the screen orientation accordingly. That same accelerometer also gives rise to a new “Shake to Shuffle” feature. It’s exactly what it sounds like. If you don’t like what you are listening to, shake the nano, and you get a new random track. You can order the new iPod nano now at the online Apple Store, or pick one up at a physical location as they arrive over the next few days.

Apple Introduces In-Ear Headphones

Apple In-Ear Headphones

announced new in-ear headphones that contain two high-performance drivers, a woofer and tweeter, built-in.  The price might be high at $79, but it may well be worth it, especially if you have a discerning ear.  The three pairs of changeable is a nice inclusion since all ears are created differently and you’ll be able to find just the right fit, unlike that last in-ear that Apple made a while back.  Another nifty feature here is the “control capsule”, which includes a microphone, volume adjustment, and music/video playback control. Oddly, despite the microphone, these don’t seem to be compatible with the - Apple says the mic is great for voice notes though. In that case, we should all run out and get these! They’ll be available in October.

What?  You don’t want to pay a high price for the Apple logo?  I mean, comfort?

Let’s Rock: Apple event planned for September 9

Apple Let's Rock iPod event

Well, what do you know? Looks like that event that Kevin Rose speculated about a couple of weeks ago is finally official. This morning, Apple sent out notification of their next event, titled “Let’s Rock”, is set for September 9th. Now, looking at the graphic, we think it is pretty clear that this one is going to be focused on s. Apple is notorious for refreshing their portable media player line in September (heck, last September was when the iPod touch was announced) for the whole back-to-school and holiday vibe.

While we expect to see new models across the board, word on the street is that the and will be the ones to pay attention to this time around. That is, unless, you are like me and have tons of media that you want with you at all times. If that is you, then you are with me in hoping we see something akin to a 250GB iPod classic. Aside from that, though, some surprises would be nice. I know I’ve been asking for it for years now, and this probably isn’t the appropriate place to announce it, but I sure as heck would just love it if Apple would also give us a new Cinema Display. Could happen, right? Yeah, I didn’t think so either.

RIchard Solo Smart Backup Battery Pack rocks for iPhone 3G

Richard Solo Smart Backup Battery with iPhone

Anyone who has picked up an knows that the battery, while great for a 3G phone, still leaves a lot to be desired. It’s simply no fun when your phone warns you that you have 20% power left while you are in the middle of your lunch break. Heck, I don’t even need to leave the house to go to work, and even I have issues with the battery. During , I had to be careful with my iPhone usage if I didn’t want the phone to run out of juice. Since I am going to be taking a trip to NYC this week, I wanted to be sure I was armed with a backup.

After doing some looking around, I came across this Richard Solo Smart Backup Battery Pack for the iPhone. In all actuality, it works with the iPhone as well as any iPod with a dock connector. It basically holds a charge that is similar to about 80% of the iPhone battery. That means that if you see your iPhone give you that 20% warning, you just plug this thing in, and it will charge it back to full. That is cool.

Even better though, you can charge the iPhone or iPod and the Backup Battery at the same time. You plug in the battery to your phone, and then connect the battery to the charger. This will first charge your device, and then once that is done, it will charge the battery. So if you do this overnight, you have a fully charged phone, and backup battery, when you walk out the door. Love it.

The device is thin enough to not be burdensome at all, reminding me of an iPod nano. I am gonna give this a try during this next week, where I will definitely be out and about and using my iPhone on a near-constant basis, being the awesome road warrior that I am. I will let you know how it turns out. Meanwhile, if you wanna pick up one of these for yourself, you can grab one here for $50. If it works as advertised, we think this is well worth it. Check the video after the break for more details, and also, we have a small Richard Solo Smart Backup Battery pack gallery we just put up as well.

Name That Commercial’s Tune

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Commercials,

As frequently as I use my Tivo, there always seems to be a ad or two that somehow manages to get past me.  And much to husband’s dismay, I’ll can easily find myself singing the commercial tune all day long.  These are the ones that have been driving me (and probably millions of others) delightfully batty over the past few weeks:

iPod NanoCommercial:  iPod Nano commercial
Description:  You catch glimpses of a video on different colored iPods.
Song lyrics:  One Two Three Four/ Tell me that you love me more/ Sleepless long nights/ That is what my youth was for/ Old teenage hopes are alive at your door/ Left you with nothing but they want some more/ Oh, you’re changing your heart/ Oh, You know who you are
Song name:  ‘1234’
Performer:  Feist

Commercial:  JCPenney commercial (“Magic”)
Description:  Strange, magical things surround women wearing JCPenney clothing.
Song lyrics:  Life inside the music box aint easy/ The malots hit the gears are always turning/ and everyone inside the mechanism/ is yearning to get out.
Song name:  ‘Music Box’
Performer:  Regina Spektor

Commercial:  Journey Diamond Jewelry commercial (“Sleeping Beauty”)
Description: Man gives his wife a diamond necklace while she’s sleeping.
Song lyrics:  How can I tell you that I love you, I love you/ I long to tell you that I’m always thinking of you/ But I can’t think of right words to say.
Song name:  ‘How Can I Tell You’
Performer:  Cat Stevens was the song’s original performer, but the 30-second cover for the commercial was done by Chan Marshall (who also performs under the name Cat Power).  Unfortunately, her version is not currently available for purchase…she only recorded a snippet of the full song.

Commercial:  Old Navy commercial (“Sweaters”)
Description:  Woman getting through her day with different sweaters.
Song lyrics:  If you are chilly, here take my sweater/ Cuz I love the way you call me baby/ And you take me the way I am.
Song name:  ‘The Way I Am’
Performer:  Ingrid Michaelson
